Next.js is an open-source React framework, created and maintained by Vercel, for building full-stack web applications. It adds to React the pieces a production site needs: routing, data fetching, rendering on the server and a build pipeline that is tuned out of the box.
Its main strength is choice in how each page is rendered. A page can be generated once at build time, rendered on the server for every request, or regenerated in the background as its content changes, and one application can mix all three. Visitors and search engines receive complete HTML, so pages paint quickly and are indexed reliably.
Next.js also handles much of the performance work on its own. Code is split per route, images are resized and served in modern formats, fonts are loaded without layout shift, and links prefetch the pages they point to.
Because it is React underneath, existing components, libraries and developer skills carry over. That makes Next.js a practical choice for marketing sites, e-commerce storefronts, SaaS products and content platforms alike.
